halloween hack 2003

Welcome to Halloween Hack 2003

The idea behind this coding challenge is to create a scary game for Halloween.

The Basic Rules

  • The entry must use the allegro / allegroGL game lib
  • The entry should have a Halloween feel. Make it spooky, creepy and scary
  • All entries must be finished on October 28th
  • Source code must be supplied
  • Have fun!

  • These are the main rules. There are few extras though:

Submitted entries will be put in one of these categories:

    The Halloween Edition Game

Take any existing game idea and give it a creepy touch. What if the Monsters had invented Tetris? The Addams wrote Zelda?

    The B-Movie Retro Feel Game

Create a game that tries to get close to the typical classical B-Horror-Movie feeling. Think Tarantula, Mummy, Nosferatu etc. The game must be monochrome.

    Everything goes

Create a game with a halloween / horror feeling. It's up to you to define the details.

    Style Points
  • Style Points are given if there's a helper named "Igor"
  • Style points are given for voice-overs
  • Style points are given for references to other classical horror movies or horror games

  • Want to enter the challenge?

Great! All you need to do is send an email to with a link to the entry. Entries smaller than 1MB can be attached to the email. (sorry, no mail link to make it a bit more difficult for the email harvesting spam bots). Only entries with sourcecode are allowed. I'll compile the source and provide a both binaries and the sources on the 29th.
Besides mailing me, you can also post at the Halloween Hack thread on allegro.cc.

    Voting

Only those entering the contest are allowed to vote. Once all entris are submitted, I'll mail you a form with all the details and criteria. They will be pretty close to the speedhack criteria (fun, graphics, sound and style on the Game-Play side and code-structure, tech-inovations and ease-of-install on the technical side).
The gameplay side has a bigger influence on the final score, so don't worry too much on the looks of your code - but make sure the game is easy to compile. Makefiles or a batch / shell file might help here.
Quite a few people use Linux boxes, so try to code as platform independent as you can :)
